Commenting on the Prime Minister's recent announcement that the General Election will take place on 6th May, Neil Hughes, Lib Dem candidate for Carlisle, said, "I am delighted that Gordon Brown has finally called the election after three years of shuffling towards doing so and mostly going backwards.

"The fact that in Britain, almost uniquely, it is the Prime Minister alone who knows when each general election will be called shows how much politics needs to be cleaned up in the UK: Lib Dems want to see fixed-term elections, a written constitution and a public right to remove corrupt politicians from office at any time following a local ballot".
